Marika, first of all, thank you so much for responding to my questions. You're a doll. But, I was more interested in the command, the imperative, as in "Michael, open the door!" or "Michael, close the door!"
And Marika, while I have you here, and being that you're such a doll, please, please, how do you say, "Have fun!" Like if your friends are going to the beach, and you shout out after them, "Have fun!" or "Have a good time!" or "Enjoy!", any of those. I love learning Ukrainian, and I have a ton of books and tapes, but they don't deal enough with commands, imperatives. If you can help me here, thanks a real lot. Sonya |

Hi Sonya,
"Have fun!" "Have a good time!" "Enjoy!" These are tough ones. I'm afraid that my Ukrainian is often very Americanized. I can think of only one phrase which would apply to the above: ![]() This translates to "merry time", but in essence means, "have a good time!" (to whom you are speaking is implied as in "let's go") I'm sure that this may be different depending on regional dialects. This I'm not familiar with. I know that I sometimes have a difficult time speaking with Ukrainian visitors, until I talk with them for a while and figure out their slang, and I guess, until they figure out mine. I often have to ask questions until they eventually use a word that I'm familiar with. But after a few days, we're totally on key. ![]() [Edited by Marika-of-PA on 31st July 2004 at 13:30] |

Marika, thank you so very much for answering my two questions. I really appreciate it. And I love the doll next to your name! It's funny how all the books and tapes that one studies from might not cover something like this. Sometimes you just need a native speaker! Again, thanks a lot!
