Chernigiv, Chernihiv, & Chernigov

Can anyone tell me about why this place has three differenet names? Chernigiv, Chernihiv, & Chernigov ? I was told that everyone calls is Chernigiv but I have to translate it to Chernihiv or CHernigov for maps.

Robert

Well, I can explain.
It is a town in northern Ukraine (Russian speaking part of the country). That's why the town has three names. In Russian it is Chronigov. In Ukrainian it's written Chernigiv, but it's being pronounced as Chernihiv, because the letter G is always pronounced as H in Ukrainian language. I think you shuld use Chernigiv for map. At least I would do so.

Chernihiv is an ancient part of Ukraine, from the time of Kievan Rus'.

Chernigov is the old ancient Rus' spelling. It also happens to be the same spelling as modern Russian. You would still see it for the same reasons you see "Lvov" or "Kiev" on maps - these are Russified names.

Chernigiv is a Ukrainian spelling. Chernihiv is also a Ukrainian spelling.

The language spoken in Chernihiv is mixed, depending on where you are - some Ukrainian, some Russian, some Belarussian.

You are welcome! Chernigiv is placed in Northern Ukraine. Write it on cyrillic and type it into Google and you'll get something.

There are no maps in English as far as I know. There are Google and Panoramio maps here:
Chernigov Map

Hope it helps. If not, email me and I will send you a map in Russian.

Best wishes,
Igor.

The Ukrainian language has two letters G
The mild G is pronounced as h in horn and transliterated as 'h'.
The correct spelling is CHERNIHIV.
