bliskucha - I must disagree with your characterization of Ukrainian as a mix of Russian and Polish. Ukrainian has similarities to both, and all 3 languages, as well as Serbo-Croation, Bulgarian, Czech, Slovak and Belarussian come from the same roots. But Ukrainian is a distinct language, not a mix of the two. If you speak Ukrainian fluently, you can usually understand some of any of the above languages (and perhaps even a lot).
An analogy would be Spanish, Italian and French - similarities in all three languages, they all have the same root, but very distinct languages. Katharine, you may want to try a CD Rom - I only know of one for Ukrainian, and go out and practice. It's only by speaking that you will truly become proficient in a language. |

Dear Kathy,
Thank you so much for straightening me out on my mischaracterization of the Ukrainian language. What you say makes absolute sense, I was just repeating pretty much what I have heard. It is absolutely a language unto itself. Thanks again! Sonya |

This post is an older one but I thought I would reply anyway.
There is an online site for learning Ukrainian. Since I don't speak it, I can't say how good the site is, but it's a starting point I guess. http://www.ukma.kiev.ua/pub/courses/UFL/ |

Get in touch w/the various local youth orgs and churches and ask where you can take Ukrainian language lessons. Saturday morning is generally the time set aside for such an activity.

Hello there.
I'm from Montenegro (ex-Yugoslavia).I have the friend here and he is from Ukraine.I can understand him when he speaks slowly ukrainian or russian language.I think that our languages are very similar. One more thing, Montenegro and Ukraine has the same problem. Serbia and Russia do not allow them to be completely free. |
