Need to be able to talk to neighbors.

I live in California, in a small apartment building. My children have a lot of friends around here, and 95 % I would say are from Ukraine. I would like to be able to talk to the parents of the children, but most of the parents haven't learned any English. I am willing to make the effort to learn Ukranian but do not know where to start.
