Depends on where you are going to use it. In Western Ukaine there are more and more people who would find it difficult to talk to you in Russian. But in general your friend is probably right.

it greatly depends on the personal attitude. For your friend from Ukraine it, probably, IS a lost game.

What other language(s) do these people find easy to speak then (other than Ukrainian)?
