Hi, Irinka,
I'm happy that your sister has a nice teacher already. But to say the truth, we "Ukrainian "Ukrainianas have no problem with Canadian Ukrainian language. It does sound a little unusual to us, but the differences are not that significant. We also call it "Diaspora's Ukrainian"So, good luck anyway! And if you gave any questions about the language, I'll be happy to answer! |

When I visited Canada two years ago, I found language the Ukrainian Canadians speak a bit funny. No offence, but we call it village language, as only older people speak right now. No problems understanding though, even though Canadian 'banyaky' not always followed me when I spoke fast.

I was travelling through western Ukraine recently with an American friend of Ukrainian ancestry who was very active in the US Ukrainian community and had gone to Ukrainian school as a kid, but had learned Ukrainian entirely in the US and had never before actually been to Ukraine. Besides an obvious American accent and antiquated words, he had a tendency to pronounce things in a very Polish sounding way - he would pronounce ж as в and я as ь and so on. Much to his annoyance people would often say "Ty shcho, polyak?" Later on though, I was very surprised to talk with some old women in the countryside of L'viv oblast' who had exactly the same accent.
