Can anyone tell me about why this place has three differenet names? Chernigiv, Chernihiv, & Chernigov ? I was told that everyone calls is Chernigiv but I have to translate it to Chernihiv or CHernigov for maps.

Well, I can explain.
It is a town in northern Ukraine (Russian speaking part of the country). That's why the town has three names. In Russian it is Chronigov. In Ukrainian it's written Chernigiv, but it's being pronounced as Chernihiv, because the letter G is always pronounced as H in Ukrainian language. I think you shuld use Chernigiv for map. At least I would do so. |

And have you heard about several attempts by Austrians in the 19th c to introduce Latin alphabet in the Ukrainian language instead of the Cyrillic? Where would we be now with Latin alphabet - probably, away from Russia and nearer to Europe!
