I've been hassled by police in Odessa - and I'm blond-haired & blue-eyed! So have other English people I've met, It's being foreign, not just skin colour, that makes them think you're a soft touch.
The rest of the Ukrainians are great, and police are full of dirtbags in every country, so I hope no-one is put off from going.

You are right on this one. Foreigners usually stand out of the crowd - different clothing, foreign language, even facial types are noticeably different. Foreigners carry dollars and are willing to pay for their being let go because they are at disadvantage. But Asians or Middle åasterners are easier to spot in the crowd.

going to ukraine

I will be going to kiev in 2003, I will be going to meet my future wife and visit her family. Can anyone tell me what I should expect from the police and people of kiev. I am also a police officer in the u.s.a. I am hoping to spend 10 days there and I hope not to have to deal with the police there.

How do i say nicely
yet another "DIM" american going to Ukraine
gary there is a thing called a book! its a magic thing whats been around for 1000s of years! "LIKE WOW"

There is a book "Culture Shock Ukraine" wirrten by Meredith Dalton, its about 500 pages long but it wrriten by an american so you should be able to understand it!

Ukraines biggest asset is it people, if you dont even know the basic things about the police, you should **** OFF AWAY FROM UKRAINE!

Having recently spent 10 days ( my second visit, this visit was to visit my in laws )in Kiev, I can say I never had any trouble with the Ukraine Police, in fact I can honestly say that the Police in Kiev have been very friendly towards me, knowing that I was from another country. My wife said I stood out as a tourist with the way I dressed, and although at times I thought the police where about to get heavy handed with me, they where more intrested in finding out how my stay in Kiev was going and if I was enjoying myself.
Even after having watched England on a Television in a bar in Kiev wearing my England colours, I never had a single problem with either the Public or the Police, all I can say is that those people who have had problems have either done something wrong or brought about a situation themselves, that warrented the police getting involved.
I am not saying that Ukraine is correction free, but arent most Countries on the take at some point, along with a lot of MPs. My advice greet the police, talk to them, shake there hand, because I found doing that put them on the back foot so to speak, but should any one have any problems, then inform your Embassy so they can take the right action.

Many police laws in Turkey. One for rich, different for poor, another for Kurds and a very special one for Armenians.
