AkMike,
I get upset by your generalities that Ukraine is only 20 years old and that since Soviet communism has ended life in Ukraine is so much better. Ukraine is not a new country, it is only had a change of governmental system and modus operandi. The roads, railways, hospitals/ health / education systems, and the industrial infrastructure that are the backbone of a nation were already there. When you consider the improvement of a nation you must examine the improvement of these structures as part of your judgement.
Of course, availability of goods and all products have improved beyond recognition (if you can afford them). Kiev is being modernised at a noticeable pace. However, this modernisation is not typical for the most part of the country. Within these 20 years it is a common perception that these important above mentioned structures are deteriorating. That unemployment, and unavailabilty of affordable housing for young marrying couples is increasing. That access to the best health care for those that cannot pay for the "extras" is decreasing. That some of the former norms of high educational standards are being compromised.
Of course, the nation needs to develop its financial base since the end of communism, but it was then and is not now void of all resources, for it is out of those resources that for the most part part has come the Bentleys, Ferraris, Mercedes, gated country mansions with security and other tokens of conspicuous wealth that can be readily seen against a backdrop of decaying streets and public services. Why are the pretty young Ukrainian ladies putting their profiles on the internet hoping to gain a husband in the west? Because they do not share your view that life for them is getting better. They can see no future for anything approaching a good life in Ukraine based on current indicators. Whether or not their view of a better life elesewhere is realistic is another matter.
