Hey All,

I am an American in Kiev for work, and I am trying to track where my grandparents came from in Ukraine. All I have to find/date their village is this short note written to my father sometime in the 50's:
"We came from Repka near the city of Chernigov. We grew up in Repka and lived in Chernigov for 2 years after our father and mother were killed."
The year they left Ukraine was around 1922. So the town must have existed around 1918. They were Ukrainian jews, and I think the town/village "Repka" may have been destroyed during the pogroms.

I know where Chernigov is on the map, but cannot seeem to track down "Repka" or find where it was (or what is there now).

Does anyone know where this village may have existed? If not, can anyone reccomend any resources for tracking it down?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Dan

Excuse me, please, "RepkA" or "RepkI"?

Because Repki is a district centre in Chernigivska oblast' (region).

the letter said RebkA but it is now very old, and my great unle was just a young buy when he left, so his memory may have escaped him by a vowel. What are the chances that it is really RebkI?

Thank you fo your help.

"reBka" or "rePka"?

As I said, Ripky (Ukrainian name, Russian is "Repki") is a district centre... It can be easily located...

Thanks so much for your help.

The village was very small, predominately Jewish (although my dad told me that there were some non-jews there) and from what I read, the cossacks sacked it and presumably destroyed the village.

Could Repki be the Repka that I am looking for? i am tryin to hunt down at 1915 map here in Donetsk, bu that is easier said than done.

Thanks again,
Dan

Don't mention it, please...

In 1915 Ukraine was Russian territory so there would be Russian names on the maps of that time. So it is quite possible.

In Donetsk? Excuse me, didn't you say you are in Kyiv?
