Hey dude, Rurick was knight aka aristocrate and had his own title and retinue or prince's armed force. Igor was his son and Oleg was his soldier (or relative) and regent for little Igor. Dir and Askold were Northmen which ruled the Kyiv but were killed by Oleg. This is how the Rurick's royal dinasty has been begun.
There are Scandinavian cronicles which tell about adventures of Northmen in Gardariki country, icluding names of Vikings and Rus cities. Besides, European sources give his lifeway before he came to Rus. And there are 3 or 4 Slav chronicles including the Nestor's most famous one which give the picture in details. For example, Rurick got supreme power in Novgorod in 862 and died in 879 likely because of rebellion. Oleg with Rurick's 3 y.o. son Igor left the Novgorod in 882 and went to Kyiv where their soldiers meanly killed Princes Dir and Askold, who also were Northmen. There is famous ancient-Rus epos "The word about Igor's regiment", and mentioned Prince Igor is for sure son of Rurick. It's not my books, buddy, these are Nestor's "The chronilce of past years", Yakimovskaya chronicle, Raskolnicheskaya chronicle. All are ancient-Rus sources. |

I still do advice to be careful and avoid categorising
Max, you have right to embrace Yarosłav or even Rurik -legend or real - as a part of history of Ukraine. I think it is still much better than worshipping the top terrorist Stepan Bandera.
To be honest, you should inform the readers of this forum that Bandera and Klachkivski have very negative response in the Eastern Ukraine. However, you should also take Russian sensitivity into account and avoid grabbing historical figures for your exclusive Ukrainian use. |

Zbyszek, believe me, if you mean the show so it's democratic process... This is pure popularity as it is. People voted, people got it. Just supported and selected figures are in the list. Everything is clear, the will of people is supreme even if it is TV show.
As about your researches of ancient-Rus history, I'd like to cite the Nestor: "Volodymyr... turned up the soil that is lightened us by Christianity. And his son Yaroslaw sowed that soil with book words and now we reap, accept the book science by the heart. There is big benefit from book studies. Books are like rivers which fill the entire World; they are the origin of wisdom, there is fathomless depth in books... you will find the great consolation and great use for your soul in books because those ones who often read books talk with God and with the wisest men." The Chronicle Of Past Years, the end of 11 - beginning of 12 centuries. Strange but words written in 12 century seem to be very actual now, in 21 century. |
