Yes,...considering Russia...I would have to say your right. I stand corrected. I guess I considered Russia as a part of Asia, not Europe. Yes, I guess I was confusing ethnic and geography a bit. I will have to reconsider that. Oh yes....I remember once seeing a map oo Europe...Yes, from the Ural mountains..where Hungarians came from....Yes, your right. I remember now....geographically speaking but politally and ethnically a different story. Sorry!

Greetings,
Stop it already. History is clear about
Ukraine being part of Hungary. The reason why we get along so good on this board is because deep down, we are all Hungarians.
Now you know it.

Bill...accordingto your religious dogma, which I can`t argue entirely against, all good souls go to Hungary to live, right! Well, it would make sense that all good souls are reincarnated into Hungarians or have the spirit of Hungarian,right!... .New religion:Hungarian Hindu....where all good souls are reincarnated into Hungarians and live in the perfect land of Hungary...
Seriously, Hungary has always been very important in Eastern Europian politics. First, the ties to the west during the cruisades, being catholic predominately and not orthodox Christain...the diverse bachground of Hungarians...mostly Magyar but also German, slavic, and Romanians. The language is not IndoEuropian and related to Finnish. Hungary has had it`s hand in the political systems of eastern Europian countries since Hungary became a political entity...not geographically speaking.I find Hungary very interesting place. So, yes, in a sense, all countries in adn around Hungary have a little bit of Hungary...This is making me Hungry..for real.

Hi Stas,
Geo-politics determine Ukraine to be in Eastern Europe. Whilst the USA continues to dominate international politics and Russia is still portrayed (quite rightly in some respect) as a threat to NATO security, this will always be the case.
Vlas.

Just to cloud the waters a bit more, Central European Review carries weekly features on Ukraine.
If you want a weekly review of all the most important news from Ukraine, it's worth checking out. http://www.ce-review.org/
It also carries some very interesting articles on all the former eastern block countries.

IMHO Europe is more a virtual area.
There is no Continent 'Europe' at least in terms of geography.

If we check the early maps, we will see that until the 12 century even the German pricipalities were not counted as Europe.

In between the 12 and 15th centuries many slavic nations adopted Christianity and in accordance with the maps of 15 century the border of Europe was already written by the eastern borders of the Greate Principality of Lithuania (velikoe knyazhestvo Litovskoe) and The Principality of Galich and Volynj (Galicko-Volynskoe Knyazhestvo which adopted catholisism in 1254).

Now this areas are included (partially) in the territory of Ukraine.

Btw, Moscovia at that time was deemed to be a part of Asia and, furthermore according to the maps there was no Moscovia at all. Only the Great Tartaria.

Btw many of the German maps at this time show Novgorod Ladoga and Pskov as the eastern European Countries (nothing to wonder that they included the Hansa states in Europe)

In the 16 century (then Moscow Russia stopped paying to the hans and begun intensive trading with Europe) the border of Europe is drawn already by the Volga river and remain unchanged during 2 more centuries.

Even in the beginning of Peter the Great rein the border between Europe and Asia is just 200 km to the east from Moscow.
(Now Ukrainian territory becomes Eastern Europe without any doubt)

Prince Tatischev - Peter's nestling -rearranges the borders of Europe. Now the eastern border lies on the Ural mountains and Ural river in the South until the Caspian sea. (18th century)
But the whole Caucasus from the Kura and Kubanj river remains Asia.

In the beginning of 19th century Bosphorus and The Dardanelles become the border of Europe. They also agreed to count the northern part of Black Sea (from Danube to Dnepr) as Europe as well. But Crimea is still Asia for the europeans.

Only in the midlle of 19th century the borders of Europe became more or less habitual: by the highest mountains of Caucasus there northern Caucasus is Europe meantime the Sauthern is Asia.

(now Georgia and Armenia feel very unhappy about it. Armenia - the first country of the world there Christianity became a state religion - in 4th century A.D. is a part of ASIA ???)

And some strange thing happend in the 1960s already. Somehow the geographists decided that the whole Ural mountains are a part of Europe and on the south the border lies on the Emba river. So Europe became 200 km bigger just recently.

So judging upon the history and cartography i would state that Ukraine is a central european country.
And in some future might become a western european country as well

Sorry for a long message.
