Germany was doomed to lose the war. There was not a possible strategy that could have saved Germany, when they attacked Poland, Hitler knew he was going to lose, because that is when he found out that Stalin was planning to attack him, and that their only oil supply in Romania was going to be taken by Red Army soon. He decided to attack USSR with all he could just to distract soviets from taking whole Romania. But neither way he was going to lose. But from my point of view Axis had one good move they did not made, while allies were busy fighting with Germany, Japan should have attacked soviet union from East, that way USSR would fight on 2 fronts, which was not going into any plan of Stalins. But Japan and USSR had agreement "not to attack each other" Japan followed it, but USSR didn't, Stalin had no rules, as we all know he broke it as soon as moved all the troops from Western front to Manchuria.

The Americans did not fight in Australia or near to it. They fought for their own interests in the Pacific but not as you mentioned. They were based here but they made a bad reputation for themselves as womanisers - that's about the bredth of it - thank God they wern't needed.
I took some artistic license to my little speel to fill the gaps, but I'll tell you all I know as accurate as I can. You see, yesterday was ANZAC day (Australia & New Zealand Army Corp). I walked past 100,000 people roaring with chear for the bugular and hearing people speak about 'that time'... ANZACs' fought together in every battle and had their own leadership. The English forces were unconnected except from a governmental level where there was some collusion. The importance for us is that we gained an identity besides that of England... It sounds pretty week but it means alot to us... (The parades are getting bigger every year - mainly because all the people we fought, join in - and those Turks seem to live a long time!! I digress...) You see we fought unwinnable battles and lost 100's of thousands of men died in Turkey, just to make a diversion for Brittish troops. It was a Whitehall stuff-up that lead us to believe we can do it better. We take courage that our men flew from bunkers into certain death thousands at a time and ended up killing more then three times as many of the enemy. We lost that battle (Gallipolli) but we achieved the goal and the English got through. Anyhow, that's my patriotic speel for the day. Cheers big ears |

Stas,
You're right. That would have changed alot if Japan had attacked from Manchuria. Stalin was waiting for it, but when intelligence (the Embassador in Toyko) discovered that there would not be an attack (perhaps wary from the battles a few years earlier with the same troops) Stalin brought all the men to the west and drove home his attack on Germany. Though it still would have been anybodies guess as to how Russia would have held on. Phillip, What was the most memorable battle for Austailia in WWII. For the Canadians, it was Dieppe. 5000 Canadains went in and 1000 came home a few hours later. We were attempting to test the landing craft and weapons for Normandy. Funny how it's the battles you lose that people are the proudest of. |
