Pale of Settlement in Ukraine

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some information on what exactly went in the Ukraine when this was happening. There was mention of a pogrom in 1881-1882 on this site: http://www.heritagefilms.com/UKRAINE.html, but I can't find much information about anything else. I don't have a specific focus, it's just something I'd like to understand. johnstruthers, please don't see this as an "unecessary provocation", I'm just trying to find out what happened.
