John, yes it is one of the worst periods, but this period has some hope that it will be changed. The situation with buses, etc.? It is only concequencies of the USSR. You know in what way was done the soviet economy. There was a raw materials in Uzbekistan, eg. (cotton), which was taken to Latvia. But there wasnt such quantity of working force. So there was taken Russian workers. Now Latvia has problems with Russian, and with raw materials, Uzbekistan hasnt factories, etc. I am sure it was made to prevent independency of parts of the country. So any local republican Government hadnt a possibility to choose the economical plan.

But one thing - when I was in Ukraine after 1991 I didnt see any specially bad treatment. Really. Yes, of course, if they can, they try to do you pay some money for everything, but if you remember their wages, it is understandable.

On the lighter side, I think the worst period in Ukraine was from my girlfriend. She went through 3 boxes of tampons!
