In good Ukrainian language the territory where Lemkos lived ( and still live ) is called Lemkivshchyna - stress on the first syllable. Lemkovyna is a traditional annual festival of Lemko culture - great event for all community. It is a very interesting original Ukrainian ethnic group that is the most western part of our people. After WW 2 many of them were deported by Polish government from their native land ( operation Wisla ) . Lemkos treasure their heritage and try to move back to native villages and towns. They are very famous in Ukraine for original songs, dances , literature , etc. Traditionally every Ukrainian site as well as Ukrainian newspaper in Poland ‘Nashe slovo ‘ have Lemko department in their dialect. I think you could try to compare literary Ukrainian and colorful Lemko dialect.
It is great that you love Ukraine and remember your background - for sure it’s worth loving ! As Dobko mentioned we discuss such questions in genealogy section - have a look and you’ll see many questions about that region. Pryvit z Ukrajiny ! |

In Poland for sure, quite likely some of it is in Ukraine too. Generally, "LEMKOVYNA" would be the "land of the Lemkos". The Lemkos are a Rus ethnic group being part of or being similiar to Ukrainian Nation, depending on the source. Some Lemkos claim they are Ukrainians, some say they are 'Lemkos, not Ukrainians'. Many Lemkos were (non-voluntarily)resettled after WWII during action "Wisla"/"Vistula", being moved to the post-German territories in the north and west of present Poland. Michael |
