Hello,
Following a question that I had posed in Hannia on the origin of the name of my mother (Skoncey), it answered me that it was a name ruthenian. After research on the Lemko site, I noted that the village of my mother (Terka) is in Lemki territory. Which differences there is between ruthenian and the lemki (origins, languages, settlement) How I can know if the family of my mother were lemki or ruthenian. Seen France, the situation is complex. Thank you for this information.

Lemko or Boyko?
Laurent, is it really important to know the answer? The diffrences between Lemko and Boyko people were not big.
If you have any photos of your ancestors' house, I could determine whether it was Lemko or Boyko construction. There are also other etnographic factors which should be taken into account. The best would be to visit Terka and carry out on-site inspection. You will surely not regret is, also because the surroundings of Terka are beautiful. Lemkowie, Jemkowszczyna, Rusine, Rusnaki, Lemaki,...
http://www.lemko.org/term.html The Ruthenian Name Question http://www.legacyrus.com/ruthenianname.htm ___________________________________________________________ PS> As per Ellis Island Records, in turn of century timeframe, Skonceys emigrating from Terka, Galicia, listed themselves ethnically as Ruthenian. Prior to the 20th century the name Lemko was derogatory. Lemkos didn't refer to themselves as Lemki!!! http://www.lemko.org/index.html [Edited by Hannia on 23rd September 2003 at 13:10] |
