A death foretold

When autumn came, Oleg remembered his horse,
which he had put out to be fed but not ridden. For
he had asked the magicians and wizards, 'From
what am I to die?' And one wizard said-to him,
'Prince, the horse you love and ride on- from him
you will die.' Oleg, accepting this in his mind,
said, 1 will never again mount my horse nor see
him!'
Oleg ordered that his horse should be fed and
should not to be brought to him; and he passed
several years without seeing the horse, while he
went against the Greeks.
When he had returned to Kiev and spent four
years, he remembered, during the fifth year, the
horse that the magicians had said would cause
his death.
Oleg summoned the head groom and said,

'Where is my horse, which I had put out to be fed
and cared for?' The groom said, 'He has died.'
Then Oleg laughed and made fun of the wizard,
saying, 'See, magicians speak falsely: all that is a
lie. The horse has died, but I am alive.'
He ordered a horse to be saddled and said, 'Let
me see the bones of my old horse.' He came to the
place where the bones were lying bare, and the
skull bare. Oleg dismounted from his horse and
laughed, saying, 'Was it from this skull that I was
to die?' And as he said this, he trod on the skull
with his foot.
Then a snake, coming out of the skull, bit Oleg
on the foot. From that snake-bite he became sick
and died.
From Primary Chronicle

I have just started to read Russian history mainly because of a documentary on Catherine the Great.

On one of the other postings I thought Stalin was worse than Hitler.
As I see it the Russian people have suffered for over a thousand years from both the right and left.
I have had a feeling that Russian will be invaded by the Arabs. There is a void there. The fall of Russia is the worst thing that has happened for the west.
