Most important regions of Ukraine
Unfortunately, there are very few maps of Ukraine before 17th century.
So one of the most detailed one was created by Giyom de Boplan, a french military engineer, at service of polish crown. He has created it somthere in 1615-1630. The map is very interesting, it shows most of the towns and great villages, as well as all the forts, castles and abbeys. The regions of ukraine are very distinctive. The west is very high populated, the east is on the contrary. So the main civilised region was polonised West regions of Ukraine (from Zvyagel, Koretz, Rivne, Dubno, Olesske, Zlotchuv) and so called Bratslavshcina (Vinnitsa, Ternopil, Zbarazh) All the above mentioned territories were very manly or polulated. Then in the center belaya Cerkva and Kiev -the last had not played a great role in the 17th cent. Then Chernigov, Pereyaslav, Nezhin. No more great centers. But all that may be said about Ukraine of the 17th cent. In 11th-13th century the main cities and cultural centers were Kiev, Pereyaslav, Chernigov. |
