Ukrainians about Poles & Poles about Ukrainians - Proverbs & Sayings
I've got an interesting book titled 'Stereotypes and Nations' which I've bought in Krakow, Poland. It contains lectures given by professors, linguists & translators from different countries including Poland & the Ukraine.
In one of them Bohdan Struminski gives examples of proverbs about the Poles in the Ukrainian language e.g: 1. 'You, a son of a Pole! You, a daughter of a Pole!' (Of course in a pejorative sense..). 2. 'Beat all the Poles with a stick!' 3. 'Mother, cover my eyes, so that I shall not see that wicked Pole'. There are many many more proverbs mentioned by the linguist, but I wonder if there are any good ones about the Poles, or Poland in the Ukrainian language? That does not necessarily mean I take stereotypes, or even proverbs very seriously. However, I think in the proverbs of a nation there's a grain of truth about its atttitude towards other nations, if only in the past. For instance, cockroaches in Western Poland are called 'Prusaki' (there's a reason for it...) & the same cockroaches in Eastern Poland are called 'Rusy'.... . We can easily guess why.. I would be grateful if someone could tell me some proverbs that exist in Ukrainian, not necessarily about the Poles (I do not deny that would interest me most) ! Cheers, Halina |
