Quote:
It was mainly directed against UPA- Ukrainian fascist guerilla organisation which tried to commit genocide on the Polish civilian population, unfortunately in some areas with success. The reason for the resettlement of population was that UPA was getting supplies and manpower from the local Ukrainian population and it was decided that cutting this support would cause UPA forces to wither away. Ukrainian and Lemko population was resettled, mainly to post-German land in the northern and western territories of modern Poland. Flow of events in Polish-Ukrainian relations: 1. Poles opress Ukrainians, but without resorting to mass murder. 2. Ukrainian UPA guerilla mass murder Polish civilians. 3. Polish AK guerilla mass murder Ukrainian civilians in retribution. 4. Action Vistula resettles Ukrainians, largely ending the conflict from point 2 and 3. Action Vistula is often perceived as something evil, but this is something tremendously blown out of proportions and not based on facts. As one can see from the flow of events, action Vistula was actually a step back in terms of brutality, ending the practice of mass murder commited on both sides which the UPA started, replacing it with resettlement, which was certainly something much more humane. While it was't humane by modern standarts, action Vistula was a step toward normalisation and humanisation of the situation in the region. Michael |

Good news from Lwów/Lviv at last!
We normally do not share many good historic news in this forum. Now, I am pleased to say that final agreement was signed between municipality of Lviv and Polish authorities, concerning the Lychakov graveyard, where both Polish and Ukrainian independence WWI fighters lie peacefully side by side not knowing about historic storms rampaging over their bodies.
After many years of difficult negotiation rounds, a final (I really hope for it!) agreement was signed and it will hopefully close the issue of official reopening the Polish Military Cemetary in Lwów/Lviv. I would like to remind that the Soviet authorities vandalized the neighbouring Ukrainian military cementary after WWII whereas it was well kept earlier under Polish administration 1919-1939. |

Polish military graveyard in Lviv/Lwow is being reopened today
It is happening today. Such an important day for Poles and Ukrainians. The events of 1918 were dramatic but it was fair fight and no side could claim exclusive right to Lwow/Lviv then. National composition of Lwow made us think about Poland while the Ukrainian surrounding suggested its placement in Ukraine.
Most of us do not fully realize that Polish soldiers buried in the neighbourhood of Lychakov graveyard were children in fact, teenagers. Their parents were far from Lwow fighting for free Poland. The reopening of the burial site after dark times of communism when the graves were desecrated has deeply symbolic meaning. |
