About this information:
The author is Ms. Rebecca Stefoff, Philadelphia-based freelance writer, who has published more than 40 nonfiction books. She has a M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania. The editor is Mr. William H. Goetzmann and holds the Jack S. Blanton, Sr., chair in History at the University of Texas. He won the 1967 Pulitzer and Parkman prizes for his Exploration and Empire: The Role of the Explorer and Scientist in the Winning of the American West, 1800-1900. About the book: The Viking Exporers, Copyright 1993, by Chelsea House Publishers. In Chapter 5, River Roads to Russia, there is some very interesting information. However, please understand I have not the time to find two other independent sources to confirm this historical information. I make no excuse for my haste to post this information. ------------------------------------------------------------ Anyway, here is the information: P. 65,"... By the 7th century, perhaps sooner, Scandinavians from eastern Sweden were crossing the Baltic to settle in trade ports on the far coast." P. 66," The Slavs had furs, hides, honey, and wax, as well as another commodity that the Vikings exploited: slaves. The Vikings captured or bought so much human merchandise from the Slavic tribes that Slavar, the Viking word for slav, became the Norse and English word "slave." P. 66," They [The Vikings] established a city-state they called Holmgard on the site of Novgorod, and a few years later they took over the city-state of Kiev, south of Holmgard on the Dnieper River. These city-states were the origin of tthe Russian nation, which was thus founded by Scandinavians. In the 19th century this version of history was rejected by the Slavic Russian scholars, who were displeased by the notion that the first Russian rulers were not Slavs. But archaeological evidence supports the Russian Primary Chronicle, and although some historians still argue the point, most now believe that the Russian state was indeed founded by the Vikings. The name Russia itself comes from the word Rus, which is what the Slavs called the Vikings. Rus may be a version of the Finnish word ruotsi, which means "rowers", or it may have referred to the Roslagen region of Sweden, home of many Vikings. Another theory holds that Rus comes from the Slavic word for "red," because so many Vikings had reddish hair. ------------------------------------------------------------ So... that't it. History holds many truths.

this facts were widely known since 19th century
The Viking origin of the first Kiev Counts (Knyazi) and their fellow-warriors (druzhina) was undoubtfully recognised by most of the historians since the 19th century.
The american author says nothing new on the subject, or does she??. |

Zhuk,
I understand you are communist. My words, fact, logic, historical reference, and Christian truth mean nothing to you. If and only IF you want to discuss history with me, please give some, hopefully objective, quotes from some historians. East or West is fine. Waiting for your quotes.

Sorry if I missed your point
I am really sorry, if you think that the subjects, you have mentioned mean nothing to me.
I do am interesting in the history of my land. But all the facts you have described are widely known. They present nothing new. Schoolboys are tought them in school. Why do you consider these facts so amazing? May be they are so new to you, but these are widely known facts. May be you will be also amased by the knowing such primitive facts like conquering Ukraine by tatars in 12th century? Do you know about capital of ukraine being Kiev, or this is also an amazing fact to you? |

Searching for INDEPENDENT sources
Zhuk,
I don't need political socialist revisionism. History needs independent sources to verify particular moments in time. As such, any independent sourced historians - read not employees of the state - regarding Ukrainian history, will be very much appreciated. Time period: Anything before 1905. Please, and only if you love history, post some quotes of independent historians regarding Ukraine's history. I wish to learn more about Ukraine. But objectively.

The same facts
The same facts you may found in the works of Nickolay Kostomarov, History of Rus.
Grushevsky "History of Rus-Ukrain" Soloviov. All they worked and published before 1917. They had wrote the same hundred years ago. Why do you take it like a news? |

History of the slavers
As usual, the "RUS" & his relatives, in their various
diyasporiya forts, guarded by B52 bombers with atomic bomb warheads, indulge in racist propoganda. Their favourite method is hidden in their word for "wisdom": k now ledge. K = a .303 bullet about to enter the body of an Afghan. (it is the sound of ****, from the anus of a "RUS" bearing horse, hitting a paved Roman road). Now = the current series of forked tongue grunts for "these times" or the "present". Ledge = the border denying the past. I quote from an old "RUS who call themselves British" history book: "The earliest known inhabitants of Italy are called by Cato and other writers, ABORIGINES, a term which, as Micale observes, must not be understood to signify a distinct race native or foreign, but to apply to tribes of Italy who were in the lowest state of civilisation". This is exactly the same sort of verbal vomit the "RUS" uses now. The origin of this garbage comes from the modern "book of the dead" now called "the BIBLE". It states specifically, we "RUS" are going to enslave you, kill you & replace you with clones of us. Vomit on "Anglo/Celt" diasporia, GOD is watching you. PS. For your information the "RUS" are natives of IBeRiYA. That is why their capital is called "dyrnekh pozbytesha" or "Mad Rid". |
