Gypsy Origins

I started a post earlier about my facination with gypsies in ukraine, and gypsies in particular. My facination is not about the negative connotation gypsies have in ukraine, but it's about their mysterious ways of adventure. Most of my facination is not realistic, however since my post I learned that gypsies came from india through romania then to ukraine.
I am really curious to know why ukrainians sing of gypsies in our songs, and write about them etc? Why are we so facinated by these people?? Also do others share my interest in Gypsy like ideas??
