I'm a 2nd generation Ukrainian-Canadian. I love Ukraine and it's rich history. I hate how Ukrainians are compared to russians. That Ukraine originated from russia but it's the other way around. And people everywhere think that Ukraine originated from russia. I know this term isn't used to often now, but Ukrainians are not "little russians". It is such an insult for me and hopefully for many others! Take for example the Nikolay Soltys case, he was referred to many times as a russian, including the community. Sure there could be both communities living among each other but it's not just russian. Amazing how ignorant the Americans are knowing who is who. I can't find anything about russian kozaks, anyone know what there uses were. I know what ours was. Or were the russian ones thought as being the Ukrainian ones???

Soviet hsitory

drij: I would refer you to 'Utopia in Power, a history of the USSR from 1917 to the present' by Michel Heller and
Alexandr Nekrich, who are two Russian historians living in the West. This should throw some light for you in your quest for more information.-JohnCullen

Soviet History
In a word 877 pages, so you see the difficulty in trying to encapsulate all of that into a simple reply for you, so hit your local library, if not you might emulate some of those americans you referred to in your starter thread...anyway knowledge is the final frontier so good luck in your quest...johncullen

Drij,

I've read some books about the history of Ukraine and Russia. And I think it is misleading to speculate about which culture originated from the other.

A thousand years ago there was no Ukraine. It was called Kievan Rus. And the people there did not speak Ukrainian or Russian. They spoke Old Slavonic.

As far as I know, both Russians and Ukrainians have orginated from these slavic people. And this is why Ukrainian and Russian languages and cultures are so similar now.

Ukrainians and Russians are like two branches that come from the same root.

Try and find a citizen of the US who knows the capital city of Canada is Ottawa. They always guess Toronto or Montreal.
Know wonder Americans would not know how to differentiate between Ukraine and Russia. Worse yet, no Americans who have heard of Belarus.

Be glad with the ones who do know, and feel better your not one who doesn't.
