Alchevsk
It is not to hard Alchevsk near Lugansk and Donetsk (between them) on a map of Ukraine.
I may try to help you find the cemetry if it is still possible although it is some 600 km from kiev. Any other details on the barraks? Zhuk@svet.com.ua |

Alchevsk>Perevalskij Raion>Luhanska Oblast
Over time, town had several names:
Woroshilowsk / Kommunarsk / Achevskoe/ now Alchevsk Gold line on digital map is highway. Luhansk & Alchevsk approximately 25.6 miles apart. Alchevsk http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_f...8wysu67_lrtgla,bb6%7c_%3d%3a%28_%3dwysu67_lrtgla%28l%241w-u.wf7%3bxcx5sf7.grfe%7cs Went thru Alchevsk listings on web. A lot of Metal & Ironworks sites. Picked up some, where you might be able to ask for help. Saw nothing historical or WW2 related. TopPoints.com - Ukraine: Alchevsk http://www.toppoints.com/ukraine/alchevsk/ Re: Find persons in Ukraine http://www.brama.com/travel/messages/16373.html All Hotels of Ukraine http://www.ukraine-hotel.com/sity_en...12&sit=Lugansk List of WWW servers in Ukraine http://library.ntu-kpi.kiev.ua/html/arhiv/arh1.htm [Edited by Hannia on 4th November 2001 at 10:44] |

Found this under Kommunarsk (one of Woroshilowsk/Vorosilograd's other names)
Language looks like transliterated Russian? Not sure what the language is. Try contacting the Webmaster. He might know about military cemeteries. Scroll down to Luhansk Title of link = Names of Towns/Cities in SSR Názvy mest v SSSR http://valka.kgb.cz/ww2/fakta/fa_rusmesta.php ALSO - The Mormon Genealogical Church has lots of info re Voloshylovhrad on film. You can order the film and view at a convenient Library Center. Very nominal cost. Started with PLACE SEARCH for Luhansk, Ukraine. Place details ('Ukraine, Voroshylovhrad') http://www.familysearch.org/eng/libr...t_disp=Ukraine,_Voroshylovhrad&columns=*,180,0 Link for LDS Home. All instructions for obtaining film there. FamilySearch - Family History Library Catalog http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Libr...rchcatalog.asp PS> Disregard the variations in spelling of town. These are all transliterations. Only correct spelling is in the original language, using original alphabet, Cyrillic. [Edited by Hannia on 4th November 2001 at 09:47] |

Thank you for oyur help
I have now since I last posted managed (with the kind help of someone) got a map of the area and on it he has marked the camp of which I am looking for. The camp number is 144/17. The man whose grave I am looking for is Erich Willke He died in this camp of Typhoid in November 1944. The only information I have is that he was buried in the camps cemetary. If I can find out if the cemetary/camp is still there and if his grave in definately there I will bring my old grandmother out. many thanks friends Sam |
