Writing an essay...suggestions?

Writing an essay in my Russian history class and the professor has left the topic open. Anyone have an suggestions for an event to cover? Or more to the point, an event that I can turn into a thesis statement on?

There's so much history to cover, I'm having a hard time making a definitive statement or argue on anything I've learned so far, there's a lot to take in. I'd of course love to write about something related to Ukraine or Ukrainian nationalism, but it's not necessary.
