Why would they? I see you are under assumption that Far East is this dark, cold, horrible place. It is NOT!!! But don't take this from me,just go to Ôîðóì.SAKH.COM: Ñàõàëèí è Êóðèëû and see for yourself, talk to people over there, you'll see...

the same way Russia controled Alaska or East Prussia-even though this one is closer.

Anyways its history showed in the beginning it did not want to become part of Russia hence the little history of Green Ukraine.

Well, those Ukrainians,Russians and Cossaks of Russian Far East didn't want to be a part of any country,be it Ukraine or Russia.I keep telling yu'all that Far-easterners consider themselves almost separate people, different from anybody else, all the while keeping their native traditions.BTW,during late 1980-s - early 1990-s we flurted with the idea of Far-Eastern Republic. There was even a Counsil of Governers, based in Khabarovsk.Needless to say,Kremlin put all that to bed mighty quick.

PS.I just project an American view on Eastern Siberia/Far East as a "cold, dark and all-together horrible place".Sorry.
