Nestor Makhno was an anarchist who is probably remembered for his role in waging guerrilla warfare against the Central Powers. After the Brest-Litovsk treaty, large parts of Ukraine were given to the Central Powers. And, of course, the people didn’t like what was done and so they rebelled. Makhno was very successful and managed to create his own anarchist society, where, supposedly, there was total equality and solidarity. To cut a long story short, Lenin ordered the arrest of all member’s of Makhno’s organization and Nestor was forced into exile.
You can read more about it here. I recommend that you watch Nine Lives of Nestor Makhno, even though I cannot testify to the historical accuracy of the movie. |

From Makhno to Gandhi - signum temporis
It looks like Makhno was another mad version of Trotsky who tried one simple solution that promised to make everybody happy. The more I read about people like Makhno, the more sad I become concluding that those false prophets developed their insane theories on murder and terror. Makhno stole idealist theories of Peter Kropotkin and implemented them in the most cruel way. It is also possible that, at certain point, he lost control over the storm he had started.
Many years had to pass until so much different leaders appeared like Gandhi or Walesa and they proved to be successful without a bloodbath. |
