Thumbs up the message rings warm

Like in anything else, there is a downside. Two points: (1) Ukraine is a NATION not a REGION, hence it should not be preceded by THE, (2) SVETLANA is Russian for SVITLANA {prononced SVEETLANA). There you have it, in proper Ukrainian, you can call her diminutively, SWEETIE.

Thank You for your Enlightenment!

I have never claimed to be a literary expert but,I will agree with you that my wife is SWEET! I never meant to offend by preceeding anything with anything.I just TYPE!
If this will cause others some concern. Please let me know! I will do my best not to do that again! Svetlana and I have lofty goals to be of help to those who wish it!We think we can add to education, supply information and, give access to resources unavailable in the Ukraine! I love my wife and her entire family is the best I have ever met including my own! It therefore seems only natural that I share her desire to improve conditions any way I can! This is our hopeful intention!

Thumbs up it's a question of propriety, not concern

Your attitude toward Ukraine is to be admired. One way to lend credence to the attitude is to avoid the disparaging use of the article 'the' in front of 'Ukraine'. Also, the Russianism imparted by the use of 'Svetlana' instead of 'Svitlana', does not help. But that is your private matter. Correct addresssing of a Nation, is a matter of propriety, and therefore offensive to all those who expect not to be considered as part of something akin to the Russian Empire. If you cannot comprehend the sensitivity on this subject, my explanation apparently will not be making a dent.

hi

Svetlana is from Odessa, Ukraine and most people speak Russian in this beautiful city. It seems to be the preferred language there and it's absolutely no offence to the rest of Ukraine.
If people decide to take offence to the way people spell some things, I believe that's their business.

Thumbs up open mind would be helpful

One reads, but closed mind interprets. Mentioning 'Svitlana' is not equivalent to enforcing it. I reiterate: THIS IS A PRIVATE MATTER. What is NOT A PRIVATE MATTER, is the blatant insertion of the ARTICLE THE in front of the Nation called UKRAINE. Such illiteracy is inexcusable and offensive.

ok

I'm sorry I have offended you with my illiteracy.
English is my fourth language and I do miss "THE" at times.
However, I can write fluent Ukrainian and Russian, so my English grammar shouldn't be too relevant since we are on Ukraine.com and I have no choice but to write in English, since I do not have Cyrillic alphabet installed in my computer.

P.S. You get offended easily.
