Hi Guys & Girls!

Don't know if anyone living in the Ukraine will read this but here goes! I'm a University student in the UK (manchester) and hopefully I'll be coming to the Ukraine this summer to work at the Institute of Biochemistry(Kiev) for 8 weeks! I just wondered if anyone out there can tell me what it is going to be be like, maybe show me around in exchange of a few coffees! If anyone is interested they can e-mail me on: 00961033@mmu.ac.uk!

Regards

Stuart

Gay in Ukraine

Dear Iridium!

Since I posted that message I have been to Ukraine. Whilst I was not openly "out" to most of the people I met, I didn't really find the intolerance that you have mentioned. I heard of a few gay people but never saw bars specifically for gay people. Maybe it isn't the Ukrainian people that have the problem but you! Do you know why you feel this way! Statistically most homophobes have latent homosexual feelings! Maybe its time to look a little further at your own feelings!

Thankyou

Stuart

I'm glad you didn't find the intolerance the first poster mentioned, Stuart; I've encountered very little of it myself - a little bafflement sometimes but I've almost always been made very welcome

Apartments are expensive!

The conditions are pretty bad... Really old Soviet buildings... Very frequently the water goes out or you can't get hot water... Especially in the summer as they are trying to replace all the old water pipes around the city.

Food prices are rising... I find Germany to be cheaper now!

The incomes and the cost of living are drastically different.

The cost of living is rising far too fast here.

They have great Vodka and some really delicious beer

Um.. Apartments are expensive - that's right :-)
About the conditions... I guess you have bad luck. You are able to find "pretty bad conditions" in any country of the world (if you want, of course). Maybe you have a reason to talk about the conditions you've mentioned with the hosts of the apartments, or to move to another place for living. Actually, I don't live in Kiev, but to my knowledge, the last time there (here) is no hot water for a while was about 5 years ago. It can happen now too, but because of "problems with the pipes" which ones are usually solved in a brief term. At least it is True for Kharkiv, I don't think there is any essential difference to Kiev.
What do you think of this? Am I right? Maybe I haven't got your viewpoint?
