MALKO Family Tree
I've started my family tree as above and have hit some road blocks. As ou can see AI'm new at this and new in using a computer. However, I seek anyone's assistance in for Malko's and have the following information:
Theo Malko, his wife Justine and daughter Marta arrived in Halifax, Canada on June 5, 1899 aboard the SS Bulgaria that sailed from Hamburg May 25. According to the ships log he was 27 yrs old, she was 25 and their daughter 1. Documents in Saskatchewan, Canada (they lived in the town of Alvena) give his name as Fedor/ Fed/Theodore and his birthplace as E. Galicia, Aust. Documents on my grandmother state her maiden name as Humenna/Ihumena/Zahumeny and state that she was born in 1874 in Borschio, Lanivsi, Ukr. According to some family members she was a widow when she married my grandfather. My Aunt Martha was born Aug 22, 1898 in Borschio. Any help or direction anyone can provide would greatly be appreciated!! |

selo/village Lanivtsi > Borschiv >Ternopil
Kathy was recently in Lanivtsi.
Pictures of present day Lanivtsi http://hrabchakfamily.tripod.com/id12.html _________________________________________________ From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Lanowce (official Polish name) was predominately a Ruthenian village with its own Greek Catholic Church > Borszczow was both the dministrative and judicial/tax district > Tarnipol was the woijiwodstwo/region > Galicia/HALYCHYNA Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Borszczow. Today selo/village Lanivtsi (Ukrainian name) > Borschivskij raion/district > Ternopilska Oblast/Region> Ukraine, latest villlage zip code is 48716 HalGal Links http://www.halgal.com/links.html Galicia - vital records http://lemko.org/genealogy/galiciapl.html Our Roots / Nos Racines http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=4394 Saskatchewan Gen Web Project - SGW - Ukrainian Saskatchewan Genealogy Roots http://www.rootsweb.com/~cansk/Saska...katchewan.html Ukrainian Community and Family Histories http://www.geocities.com/ukrainianfamilies/ Historical Highlights in Saskatchewan http://www.infoukes.com/history/saskatchewan/ Last edited by Hannia; 8th August 2006 at 05:32. |

LDS/Mormon Library has metrykal records 1847-1904 for Greek Catholic Church of Lanowce, Borszczow (Polish name).
FamilySearch.org - Family History Centers http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Libr...ameset_fhc.asp Later records at Borszczow RAHS (District Archives). These are tricky. RAHS will provide only specific document at a charge of appx $75 USD, which is prepaid thru your nearest Ukrainian Embassy or Consulate in the guise of Privacy Release. Additionally, I have just read that there are still some metrykal registers at Lanivsti Church. Best to use local researcher, who is currently writing book re Families in Borschiv Villages. I highly recommend that you get in contact with Vitalij. Rates are very fair for both translation and research, and in many cases cheaper than contacting Lviv Historical, Ternopil State & RAHS direct. vivandr@brandeis.edu Malko & Humenna/ or Humenniuk??? Family Tree would make for the best Family Christmas gift. ________________________________________________ note: Aunt Martha (Марта Малко) was born Aug 22, 1898 in Borschio/BORSCHIV (Ukrainian)/ Borszczow (Polish). She and her parents were Ruthenians/Ukrainians from Austro-Hungarian Empire, therefore immigration papers show them coming from Austria. Immigrants frequently referred to their district center town as place of origin for geographic reference, because their own villages were small??? Given name, Marta, has Syrian roots and means noble lady. Fedor/Fedko/Fedio are all diminutive variants of given name Teodor/Theodore, which has Greek origin and means God's gift. In Ukrainian ФЕДОР. Justina's given name would have been pronounced YUSTYNA in Ukrainian. If you cannot view Cyrillic letters above, place your cursor anywhere on this window, where it is blank. Right click mouse once. Left click ENCODING. Left click CYRILLIC WINDOWS. Last edited by Hannia; 8th August 2006 at 07:42. |

Malko Family Tree
Hannia,
Thank you so much for all the information!!! I couldn't begin to tell you just what it means to get so much help!!! I do read Ukr but haven't spoken for over 50 years so that my grammar and enunciation are poor. However, I didn't have a problem with reading Aunt Marthas name. All the best. |

Happy New Year!
Contact Vitalij and he will put you in touch w/Ihor. Although Ihor lives in Lviv, his forte is the Ternopilska Oblast/Region and its Archives. He is originally from a village not far from your ancestral village. Rates are very reasonable. vivandr@brandeis.edu |
