Red face Translation

Does the first name, " Lesko" , translate to any other name ion Ukrainian? My Grandfather had a brother in this country and we called him "Oscar". Is this the same man?

Lesko is diminutive of Olesko/Oleksa in Ukrainian, equivalent to Alexander/Alex in English.

Oscar has either Old English roots, meaning spear of god or Gaelic roots, meaning friend of deer.

Someone in power, like employer, probably could not pronounce Uncle's given name, so to facilitate matters for himself called Uncle by a completely different given name???

Anglicizing names happened frequently. Names like Wasyl and Paraska became William and Pearl. The only thing these given names had in common was the first letter.

Thanks Hannia. I think this may be my great uncle. My father's family only used americanized names.
