Red face Looking for Family in Ukraine

Hello. I am currently doing research on my family to make a family tree. I am a second generation American but my grandparents (on both sides) would not talk much about the Ukraine, so I am left at a dead end. If anyone can help, I would be most appreciative.

My Gido was Karpo Moshtuk (Karpot Mostuk) and he came into Ellis Island in 1913 when he was 17 years old. His residence is listed as Luciene, Austria on the ship's manifest but parts of the Ukraine were under Austrio-Hungarian control then. I do not believe the town name is correct. My mother says he was from the Ivan-Franko oblast.

I am going to work on tracing one relative at a time, so please be patient with me.

Thanks again for any help you can give.

Mimm

KARPOT MOSTUK, 17 yr old Ruthenian male w/$25 on his person, arrived at Ellis Island on 10/18/1913. Karpot was appx 5-5 w/blond hair and green eyes He was coming from Lucienz, Austria and heading for his uncle's (OLEKSA>possibly anglicized to Alexander OLEKSYN) @ 56 Herman St. in Rochester NY. Karpot left his father WASYL MOSTUK behind in village.

From late 18th century to 1919 Lucience/badly transliterated LUCZYNCE (Polish name) was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church> Rohatyn was both the administrative and the judicial/tax district > Ivano-Frankivska Region > Galicia Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE. 1919-1938 it came under reconstituted Poland's domain. Poland had not existed as a geopolitical entity for the previous 125 yrs. Post WW2 this region came under Soviet domain (Ukraine SSR) until 1991, when it became independent.

Rochester is one of the oldest Ukrainian communities in America. The first Ukrainian immigrant,Evstachiv Makohin, arrived from the Rohatyn district in 1901. Within a few years Rochester had some 20 Ukrainian immigrants from the Rohatyn area, mostly Ukrainian Greek Catholics.

There was a famous Ukrainian painter born in Luchyntsi. His name was Vasyl Diadyniuk. Your Grandfather would have worn clothing like shown in painting.

I looked for Oleksa Oleksyn in Ellis Island Records and found one also heading for Rochester (in-law Nowak's place) in 1911. He lists himself coming from LUCZYNCE (as it appears on manifest)/today Luchyntsi. This confirms above post as correct.

It is also highly probable that your ancestral family on Deedo's side is HUTSUL. This is an educated guess based on geography. Hutsul were/are a micro-ethnic Rukthenian/Ukrainian group.
