Looking for ancestors in Ratno
I am looking to find more information about my family that came to the US in the early 1900's from Ratno, Poland. (now Ukraine)
I have a marriage date for my great grandfather, Itzak (or Itzig) Zamel who married Famya Freidel Teitelbaum, on October 25 1903 in Ratno I also received info that Itzak Zamel "left the Czar's army and escaped to the US with an Uncle". His Naturalization papers say he was in the Army from 1901 to 1903. He emigrated from Bremen, Germany to Baltimore , Maryland (US) in 1904, and his wife and daughter in came in 1906. How can I find more information about this family in Ratno? |

From late 18th century to 1921 there was no such geopolitical entity as Poland. Ratno was located in the Kovel District > Vohlynskaya Gubernaya/Region > Russia, today Ukraine, on the border w/Grodno Guberniya >Russia, today Belarus. http://www.jewishgen.org/Ukraine/Vol...S/volhynia.jpg Pinkas Hakehillot Polin: Ratno, Ukraine http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pink...l5_00187b.html Welcome to the Jewish Genealogical Society of Colorado http://www.jewishgen.org/jgs-colorado/history.html RTRFoundation http://www.rtrfoundation.org/archdta.html Consider contacting Archives in Lutsk and asking whether Jewish Records for 1906 Ratno are in Lutsk or Kiev. "Everything is Illuminated"
Have you seen newly released DVD "Everything is Illuminated"? It is a powerful little masterpiece, directed by Liev Schreiber, and set in Vohlyn Region.
It is based on the critically-acclaimed novel by Jonathan Safran Foer and tells the story of a young man's quest to find the woman who saved his grandfather in a small Ukrainian town that was wiped off the map by the Nazi invasion. What starts out as a journey to piece together one family's story under the most absurd circumstances turns into a surprisingly meaningful journey with a powerful series of revelations -- the importance of remembrance, the perilous nature of secrets, the legacy of the Holocaust, the meaning of friendship and, most importantly, love. |
