Konowalchuk/Jarowyj

Hi there,

New memeber here and I have a question or two about my family Ive been able to trace my gggf Hnat Konowalchuk/Konolowczuk/Konowalcsuk back to Hermakivka Borshchiv immigrated to Canada sometime between 1897 to 1901,trying to find any other relations there any ideas how to go about it?

Second question is my ggf on the other side was born in Burdiakivtsi Borshchiv province as well and in the papers I have his name has changed 7 times originally i believe it was Matei Jarowyj immigrating to Canada through the port Halifax May 1908 any idea how to research his family back in the Ukraine would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Easter - Hrystos Voskres!

Matei Jarowyj = Matwij (Mathew in English) Jarowyj (pronounced Yarowyj) The only correct spelling of his name is using the original language and the Cyrillic Alphabet.

From late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Burdikowce (Polish spelling) was predominantly a Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own Greek Catholic Church. Borszczow was both the administrative and the judicial/tax district > Tarnopolskie Wojiwoidstwo/Region > Galicia/Halychyna Province administered by ethnic Poles for the AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE. The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Skala. 1919-1939 region belonged to Reconstituted Poland. Post WW2 until 1991 it belonged to Soviet Union.

Today selo/village Burdyakivtsy still exists > Borschivskij raion/district > Ternopilska Oblast/Region > Ukraine, latest zip code is 48715

LDS has copies of metrykal records for Burdyakivtsi !!! Metrical books, 1831-1902 Greek Catholic Church of Burdiakowce (Borszczów district). Microreproduction of original manuscripts at the State Archives of the Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. Record group 485, series 1, file 11-12 -- Record group 487, series 1, files 19-19a, 20-21. Text in Latin, with some in Polish and Russian. Greek Catholic church records (births, marriages) for Burdiakowce (Borszczów), Galizien, Austria; later Burdiakowce (Borszczów), Tarnopol, Poland; later Burdyakivtsi (Borshchiv), Ternopil, Ukraine. Includes the towns of Gusztyn and Zbrysz.

Once you have sibling names etc., consider writing the Village Administrator and making an inquiry re any surviving family still residing in the village. Your other option would be to have a local visit the village and make personal inquiries for you. I can recommend someone, if you like.

HERMAKIVKA (Polish name = Germakowka)
Small village, located 20 km SE of Borshchiv, not far from Zbruch (only 5 km west to it. Zbruch River, that was the border between Austrian and Russian Empires during
1772 - 1918 time frame. Hermakivka was on Austrian side of the river). What is remarkable about Hermakivka is that there is Trayan Wall south of the village. The wall stretches from Hermakivka south via Zalissya and Kdryntis to river Dniester. It was built by the Romans (Roman emperor Trayan) as the Northeastern border
of the Roman Empire (Province of Dacia).

Today selo Hermakivka still exists > Borschivskij raion > Ternopilska Oblast > Ukraine, latest zip code is 48742

From late 18th century to 1919 wies Germakowka (Polish spelling) was also a predominantly Ruthenian/Ukrainian village w/its own GC Church. Borszczow was the administrative district and Mielnica was the judicial/tax district> Tarnopolskie Wojiwoistwo > Galicia Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The filial RC Church was in Krzywcze.

LDS has some of the Germakowka/Hermakivka records copied. Metrical books, 1870-1877 Greek Catholic Church of Germakówka (Borszczów district). Record group 485, series 1, file 13. Greek Catholic church records (births) for Germakówka (Borszczów), Galizien, Austria; later Germakówka (Borszczów), Tarnopol, Poland; later Hermakivka (Borshchiv), Ternopil, Ukraine. Text in Latin, with some in Polish.
