I am researching the family name Hluchowecky and hope to learn more about our family history and relatives.
The oral family tradition speaks of a historical version describing the Hluchowecky lineage as originating from the Ukrainian city of Hluchiv, in the Sumy Oblast. Following the Battle of Poltava in 1709, which saw the combined forces of Ukraine's Hetman Ivan Mazepa and Charles XII of Sweden being defeated by Russia's Tsar Peter, an ancestor decided to settle in Western Ukraine, where he founded the settlement of Hluchovets, which at that time was subordinate to the village council of Krasiv, Mykolayiv raion, Lviv Oblast - not far from the beaten path of Lviv - Stryi, 13 kilometres from the railway station of Shyrets, Ukraine. The largest settlement of the Hluchowecky family - is in the Ukrainian village of Ostriv near Shyrets; some of the descendents live in the village of Mistok, Pustomityvsky raion, and one of them Rev. Wasyl Hluchowecky was for many years the village priest in Ostriv, near Ternopil, and his family now lives in Canada - in Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, Ontario and in the United States. This family tree begins with a great grandfather Ivan Hluchowecky born in 1849 in Ostriv, Ukraine. |

AHLUCHOW,
Hlukhiv was a district center populated by Left Bank Cossacks. Originally Hlukhiv (founded appx 13th century) was in Chernihiv Region. There are some metrykal records available thru LDS for Hlukhiv from 1839, but only from one of the 6/7 Hlukhiv Orthodox Churches. These records were filmed as copies of the ones in Sumy Oblast Archives. Older records may still be in Chernihiv??? By your web site you look to have already done a fair amt of work. Your Ancestor emigrated and settled in Ostriv some time in middle 18th century??? http://www.euronet.nl/users/sota/haggman.html I don't see LDS films for Ostriv. They are most likely in Ternopilska Oblast Archives or in RAHS (District Archives). Vitalij's friend, Ihor, is from Ternopil and knows his way around both Archives. Vitalij is currently in Arizona and will not be back until the 28th. Rates for research are very reasonable. vivandr@brandeis.edu PS> You probably already know that Ostriv is the birth selo of famous writer/literary critic, Myron Korduba, actor/composer/dramatist, Bohdan Antkiv, and poet, Wasily Yarmousha. |
