Hi,
I just joined after reading the many great posts. My family is from MostyWielkie; some came to the US some stayed. I have found some maps, but very little info as to the town, or my ancestors surnames. Those would be Sliwinski, Bandill, Scheremeta, Kmyta. My grandfather was born in 1892, and he was one of the younger children. Any help as to where to find info on these surnames, or the town-then and now. I do realize there have been many changes in the name. Thanks, Carol |

You can find the nearest FHL at your local LDS at this site: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Libr...ameset_fhc.asp In Canada, the rental is $7.50 for each microfilm (the price just went up from $4.50 on Jan 1st). Check at your local FHL in case someone has already brought any of your microfilms in on indefinite rental. You'll then be able to view them for no charge. Here is a site for knowing what to expect and helping you to understand the information in these records: http://www.halgal.com/vitalrecords.html Near the bottom of the page, check the all links under: Reading Vital Records and also all the links under Tutorial of Vital Records. This is the format that the records will be in. You'll notice that the surnames are very easy to pick out as they appear the same as if they were in English. You might find this site with the information on Latin terms found in the records useful as well: http://www.infoukes.com/lists/geneal...1/11/0417.html Also: http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/Latin_Terms_and_Phrases.html You can see old photos of Mosty Velyki here: http://www.szukamypolski.com/arch/art/gap/917 http://www.szukamypolski.com/arch/art/gap/1160 Mark Dusyk |

Hello Mark, Happy New Year! _________________________________________________ Carol, Late 18th century to 1919 wies/village Mosty Wielkie (Polish name) had both a Greek Catholic and a Roman Catholic Church > Zolkiew was administrative district & Mosty Wielkie itself was the judicial/tax/subdistrict > Lwowskie Wojiwodstwo/Region> Galicia/HALYCHYNA Province, administered by ethnic Poles for the AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE. Immigration records will read that Kmyta ancestors were Ruthenian/Ukrainian (ethnicity)emigrating from Austria. Your Kmyta ancestors would have considered themselves HALYCHANY/Galicians. ________________________________________________________________ Today selo/village Velyki Mosty is still a fair size village. Âåëèê³ Ìîñòè*** means BIG BRIDGES in Ukrainian. > district has changed. Sokalskij raion/district > Lvivska Oblast/Region> Ukraine (abbr UA), latest zip code 80074-075 _________________________________________________________________ I think a closer transliteration for surname would be KHMUTA - Õìóòà*** in Ukrainian??? What was Grandfather's given name and where did he settle upon immigration? During same time frame, Scheremeta family would most likely have been from Vohlyn Gubernia/Region > Tsarist Russia (today Ukraine). The region was just north of Velyki Mosty. Do you have given names for surnames you are researching? ***If you cannot view Cyrillic letters, place your cursor anywhere on this window, where it is blank. Right click mouse once. Left click ENCODING. Left click CYRILLIC WINDOWS. |

Dear Mark and Hannia,
Thank you so much for all the information! I am not sure what you mean by Cyrillic coding. My grandfather was John Sliwinski, his siblings were Piotor, Thecla, and Marie. John, Thecla and Marie settled in Brookyn NY. Their parents were Anton and Anna Sliwinski. My grandfather changed his name to Bandill, saying it was his mothers maiden name. We weren't sure if this was true; but Thecla and Marie have that listed as her name on their death certificates. Tecla was married to Mikolaj Kmyta, and Marie married to Fedge Scheremeta. I have learned this is a derivative of Theodore? It seems as if my grandfather was the youngest of these children--I am not sure if there are more, he did mention Irene. Both women were married when he came to the US; I do not know when they did marry. I have learned that since his brother was older, he inherited the family property-farm, and thus Grandpa was sent to the US to live with his married sisters. And his father was the town official--of some sort. As to religion, he said he was of the Easthern rite. I so appreciate your input and advice. Best, Brooke |

Surnames and names of towns/villages were transliterated (sounds like) from Ukrainian Cyrillic Alphabet to English Alphabet. If you cannot view Cyrillic letters in my post, follow instructions in that post and your computer will then recognize them and allow you to view them.
