Both surnames show up in Halychyna/Western Ukraine.
What do you know about your parents? Where did they marry? Appx when did they immigrate? Where did they settle upon immigration? Where were you born? Once you ascertain where Tato and Mama came from, you may very well find surviving family still in Ukraine.

i have my parent's passports, they were born in poland. after that nothing. so where does one even start searching?
i know both had family in ukraine but that's where it stops. so many secrets & a lot of lies. & for what? no one in our family knows anything about anyone which makes it so so sad. both parents are dead now & my sisters & i know nothing about our cousins, aunts & uncles. also health info would be nice because it seems cancer runs in our family on both my parent's sides. |

Iryna,
White Pages will be of no use, unless you know the language and the specific place. Ukraine is still predominantly a non-digitized place. Even telephones are not as common as we would like to think. Many just can't afford them. I suspect that many Ukrainian DP's in the Diaspora lived w/huge holes in their hearts, and it was simply easier not to discuss that pain. I ran your surnames thru some old immigration records and found Chy(i)meras coming from Halychyna and Vohlyn. The Strykiw surname shows up mainly in what was Galicia/Halychyna. What I find especially interesting is that your parents were married before immigration to Great Britain. England initially only accepted single DP's. Did your parents attend a Ukrainian Church? Do you have a copy of your baptismal certificate? There may be something there that will answer your questions. _________________________________________________________________________ Your father might have made a donation to this org. If he did, they have a card file of donors. Information includes parents' names, mother's maiden name and exact place of origin. The General Secretariat The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain 49 Linden Gardens Notting Hill Gate London W2 4HG England UK Tel. +44 20 7229 8392 Fax. +44 20 7792 2499 Email: gensec@augb.co.uk When you contact them, tell them that you want to reconnect to your Ukrainian roots and could they please get someone to look thru their membership cards. If they are successful, make a contribution in your parents' name. [Edited by Hannia on 13th January 2006 at 03:30] |

They were single. That makes a lot more sense. Good Luck w/The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain. You may have to do a little pleading. There use to be a lovely old man there, who was always more than happy to look thru those membership cards. He's no longer there, but give it your best try. If your Father ever made a donation to this org, and most Ukrainian DP's did, you will find the personal information you are seeking. |
