Hello Betty, In 1908 Nazurna (Polish spelling) was predominantly a Ruthenian/Hutsul village with its own Greek Catholic Church. The judicial/tax sub-district was Gwozdziec. The filial Roman Catholic Church was in Kolomyja. This region was frequently called Hutshulschyna. It was a part of Galicia/HALYCHYNA > administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today selo/village Nazirna (Ukrainian name) still exists > Kolomyjskij raion/district> Ivano-Frankivska Oblast> Ukraine (abbr UA), latest zip code 78265. Contact Vitalij for letter writing to village administrator re any surviving family still in the village. Communicating in Ukrainian on the local level is ideal. Charges for translations are very reasonable. Click on to e-mail icon below his post. http://www.ukraine.com/forums/showth...?threadid=5245 Nazirna Church Records don't look to have been filmed by LDS. Contact Archives below for list of Paraska's siblings. There is no prepayment at Ukrainian Archives. Once Archives has located data, they will notify you w/general info and provide you w/cost and method of payment. You at that point can opt to accept or decline. State Archive of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast [Derzhavnyi arkhiv Ivano-Frankivskoi oblasti] 42a Sahaidachnoho, 76006 Ivano-Frankivsk Tel/Fax: (03422) 4-90-77; 6-38-16 e-mail: daifo@il.if.ua Working hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00-17:00 Last but not least, you can hire someone out of Ivano Frankivsk to travel to Nazirna and make a personal inquiry on your behalf. igor@micro.il.if.ua Ihor teaches at Ivano-Frankivsk University, comes with exc references, speaks English, has a computer and car. Again rates are very reasonable. If there is any surviving family, he will find them for you. |

RE: Your search for grandmother Paraska Sorochan who emigtared to Canada in1908:
I am wondering whether your grandma is a descendant of my family. Below is a short but early history of my grandfather. Most of my living relatives now live in Alberta and British Columbia. Ivan Sorochan was born in 1862 in the Village of Knyazi,County of Snyatyn, Province of Halychyna, Ukraine. His parents were Onufry and Anetza Sorochan. He had four brothers --- Tanasko, Ilia, Wasyl and Stefan - and three younger sisters. When Ivan was eight years old; his father, stepmother, three sisters and one brother died in a typhoid epidemic. His oldest brother, Tanasko, raised the survivng brothers. Two Sorochan brothers, Wasyl who migrated to Canada in 1897 and Ivan who migrated to Canada about 1900. Both settled in the Edmonton, Alberta area. Thank you, Walter Sorochan e-mail: wsorochan@san.rr.com |

Hi Walter:
My grandmother's father was Samual and he had a brother named Ivan who had a son Vasly born in 1900, this I have found out from the village Mayor in Invo Ukrajinska Oblast, Samual lived in the village of Nazirna from 1867 to 1947 The mayor gave me the name of a woman named Maria who was also a granddaughter of Samual and daughter of Samual's daughter Olena.
