I live in Canada. I have been told that the surnames "Prociuk" and "Leskiw" are very common in Ukraine. I'm hoping that someone with either of those names reads this message and replies. I am a 3rd generation Canadian with Ukrainian ancestry. My great-grandparents on both my Mother's & Father's side immigrated to Canada from Ukraine. It is very likely that I have relatives living there, and would like to meet them through email. If anyone has any information on these 2 names, please reply. Thank you.

What are the given names and appx when did they immigrate to Canada? Where did they settle upon immigration?

Knowing the exact place of birth is critical to your search!!!

What sort of research have you done in Canadian Archives?

I am a prociuk and live in alberta. My dad grew up in northern Alberta. His parents moved from the Ukraine to Canada in the late 30's.

I'm a Leskiw and would like to know the origin of my surname as well. In the Ukrainian language the name is written L-E-S-K-I-V. I believe when my parents went through Germany the last letter changed from V to W because of the German alphabet.

old uke,

Happy New Year!

The W/V story has nothing to do w/German Alphabet.

One of the secret provisions, signed at Yalta Conference by Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin, was forced repatriation of Soviet citizens to USSR.

Many spelled their surnames & given names using Polish Alphabet (using W) in order to avoid that repatriation.
