Hello,

My name is Wojciech Magnowski. I live in Rzeszow, Poland.

Since several months I am trying to find out something more about my ancestors. Something I got from my family. Now I am trying to explore internet possibilities.

After the II World War my family has moved from Lviv to Zamosc, Poland.
In Lviv there have been my grandfathers, i.e. Wladysław Zygmunt (1910 - 1983) and Maria (Telicka) (1913 - 1959). Further to the past there were their parents: Zygmunt Magnowski, (? - 1912), son of Dominik Magnowski and Julia (Laskowska), and Ludwika Hedwiga Magnowska (Hartlieb) (1867 - ?), daughter of Antoni Hartlieb and Barbara (Swadowska)

I have also "Testimonium nativitatis et baptismi" from 1865 of Honest Dominik Magnowski, born 6.08.1830r. in Jezupol, son of Honest Mateusz Magnowski and Marianna, daughter of Sebastian Matuszewski. His godfather was Dominik Magnowski, my grandgrandfather?

So I am looking for some hints, as I am quite new in genealogical researches. I would like to explore history of Magnowski family and know something more about Jezupol.

Perhaps someone will help me, perhaps Hannia?

Turn of the century wies/village Jezupol ( today selo ZHOVTEN > Tysmennytskij raion/district > Ivano-Frankivska Oblast/region [formerly Stanislawow woj.] ) was a fair size village ( with its own Jewish Kahil and RC & GC Churches) in Galicia/Halychyna > Austro-Hungarian Empire. Current zip code for village is 77431.

It is appx 7 km from Halych, the former capital of the Halych-Vohlynian Principality in the 10/12th centuries. Up until the 16th century it was a village named Tzaishibesi, which had a wooden fortress. When the fort was destroyed during one of the Tatar incursions, Jacob Pototski, Breslau Wojiwoda and private owner of the village, renamed it Jesupol, after Jesus. In 1598, a fortress & Dominican monastery was erected, and the town developed next to it. The monastery had a rich and famous library of ancient scriptures and prints.

my name is john frank magen, i live in ecuador my greatgrandfather was john magnowski he was born in russia, polish jezupol , austria as the manifest of the sailing from hamburg the year he came to north america , at the entrace in sep 25 in the year 1907 imigration register his name under jan magnowski that few year later will became john magen i really dont know the reasons and how this happens; then , he married sophia drozdzel from france, the lived in new york for a few years and had two sons joseph magnowski my grand father he was born in april 17th 1912 in connecticut and frank magnowski my fathers uncle he was born in new york two years later in jenuary, this all i know from my family and ive been looking for more, my grand father came to ecuador with the marines and open an shack reparing radios how years later he will found the amateur radio from guayaquil, he also found the golf country club and a industries of records too. he had two sons my father john henry magen wilmot and my aunt june. our family is not too big as 25 people. please try to have contact with me as i am the only one interested to find more about our family blood line, my email is john@tsafiki.com, hope i have some luck

Jan is Polish for John in English. According to Ellis Island Records Jan's father was Jakob. Upon arrival he lived in a group house w/his friend from village, Mikolaj Czernopski.

The curious thing is that there is another Jan Magnowski, Polish, 27, married arriving in NY from Jezupol 11/23/1906. No name of relative in Jezupol listed.

There is also a Franciszek (probably anglicized to Frank) Magnowski, Polish, married, 23 yrs old arriving 11/21/913. He listed his father as Domnik Magnowski in Jezupol. It is the custom in that part of world to address 1st cousins as brothers or sisters.

The other Magnowski from Jezupol went to Rankin, Pennsylvania. This is the area where there were many jobs in the coal mines. Others went to Youngstown, Ohio and Chicago. Illinois. There were also some in the family that went to Vancouver, Canada.

Have you ever researched LDS (Mormon) Films? Those are now available for RC Church in Jezupol. These should give you a good idea of who is who in the Magnowski clan. You can research these yourself or you can have one of our members do the research for you. Of course it is much cheaper to do the work yourself.
