The Czech nobility were largely expelled after the battle of White Mountain in 1620, and the ruling classes came to be German-speaking. In the early 17th century opposition to Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor as King of Bohemia led to the Thirty Years War and the selection of an alternative protestant king, Frederick V, Elector Palatine. In the late 18th century Czech people, at the time mostly lower classes, started their national awakening, forming a movement called Oldczechs. After the transformation of the empire into Austria-Hungary, Bohemia became an autonomous province, but Czechs already made up a majority of the people. National tensions arose in Sudetenland where the population was mainly German, and this eventually led to the paralysis of Austria. After World War I, Bohemia became the cornerstone of the newly-formed country of Czechoslovakia. 1939-1945 Bohemia together with Moravia formed the German Protectorate of Bohemia-Moravia (''Reichsprotektorat B hmen-M hren''). After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, Bohemia became a part of the new Czech Republic in 1993. Hastening to his assistance he helped him to the house and to his bed. Death occurred a few minutes later. Obituary John M. Schmid, one of the pioneer residents of Brown county, passed away at his home six miles northeast of Sleepy Eye February 28th at the age of 73 years and 7 months. He was born in Stadlein, Bavaria, August 1, 1850 and emigrated to America in 1869 coming direct to the home of his uncle at New Ulm. One year later he returned to New York to work as a brick layer, but in 1871 again took up his residence at New Ulm. On January 16th, 1877 he was married to Anna Losleben and shortly afterward they moved to a farm in Home township where he made his home until the time of his death. He leaves a wife and nine children, one having died in infancy. The living are Jos. A. Schmid of Lamberton, John T. Schmid of Genola, Wm. J. Schmid of Home township, Mrs. Ludwig Schirlinger of St. Paul, Andrew J. Schmid of Balaton, Mrs. Henry Baumann of New Ulm, George P. Schmid on the home place, Michael M. Schmid of Fairfax, Peter Schmid of Milford township. He also leaves sixteen grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at ten o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic church, Rev. Father Renz officiating. Interment in the Catholic cemetery. *** Notes for Anna Losleben: Anna Losleben -> William Schmid -> Ralph Schmid -> Mark Schmid Found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gbhs/newsletter/april94.html: GERMAN-BOHEMIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY NEWSLETTER P. V No. 1 April, 1994 Louis Lindmeyer, Editor Research Commitee News by Robert Paulson Valuable Research Information Uncovered Maximilian Utz, our friend, tour guide and tireless researcher in the Czech Republic has uncovered some very valuable information for us in the church records in the Pilsen archives. While doing research in the church books of the Church Community of Berg (Hora sv. Válava), which includes the villages of Berg, Hostau, Natschetin, Schidfenau, Schilligkau, Trohatin and Zeisermühl, he discovered that the priest listed the persons from his parish who had emigrated to "Amerika", their house number, birth date, parents names, and the year that they left the parish. Listed below is the information that he found from the village of Trohatin. It is interesting to note that all the listings are for children born between 1856 and 1858. Our hope is that he will find additional information for us in the church books from other parishes. At this time there was a cemetery, blacksmith shop, ice house where ice blocks were packed in sawdust, flour mill run by water power forced by a dam some distance up the Cottonwood River. A few years later, a saw mill where logs were cut into lumber was added to the village. This was run by steam engine, operated by Heidemann Brothers. There were six dwellings in Iberia. The Prokosch home was a few rods east of the schoolhouse. Mr. Frodl, and elderly single man, owned a blacksmith shop. He served in WWI and I don't believe he returned to Minnesota after the war. I need to check out the military records and Fort Snelling cemetery records. My grandmother knew he had a daughter Mary Ann living in the Chicago area. She said he was stationed in Texas and married there and had a daughter. I don't have anything on her. How did your husband obtain the photo of Matt? Perhaps he had more children than the daughter? Don't know of a Michael Neid that would be the age of your husband's dad. Here is the tree: Joseph Neid & Theresia Nuing. There son Charles born 2-4-1858 came to U.S. 6-9-1882 from Prussia. He settled in Holstein, Iowa. In 1883 he married Susanna Entinger. Their children were Joseph (my grandfather) born in 1884, Maria Juliana (died as child), Katherine Margaret, Katherine Gertrude (died as child), Matthew (born 6-13-1891) and Otildia. Susanna died 6-14-1894 in Iona, Minnesota where they moved to six years earlier. Charles later married Emma Bertrand in 1896. They had two sons: Edward born 1897 and John born 1901. They lived in the Sleepy Eye, Minnesota area until 1917 when they moved to Kissimmee, Florida. I believe I have seen a picture or two of Matt with Charles and Emma in Florida. Edward's first wife died during child birth along with their first child. He later remarried and they had no children. John's wife had a daughter from a previous marriage. There was another Neid family living in the Sleepy Eye area that were cousins, I believe, of Charles. They were Joachim and Mathildia Neid. There children were: Theresa, Katherine, Edward (never married), and Reinhold. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'll keep your information in mind as I continue my search. Keep in touch. August 1921 Married 50 Years Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kloeckel, Sr., were most agreeably surprised by their children and grandchildren at their home on North Payne street, Monday evening, the occasion being their golden wedding anniversary. The evening was pleasantly spent in social conversation and as a climax a sumptuous jubilee luncheon was served. It was indeed, an enjoyable affair for the jubilarians, as well as for their children and the latter's families. Mr. Kloeckl is a native of Koste' zen, Bezirk Mies, Kreis Pilzen, Bohemia, Austria, where he was born June 11, 1849. He has passed life's 72nd milestone. His esteemed wife, ? Miss Mary Knier was born in the neighboring village of Elschelin, April 25, 1848, and is , therefore, past 73. They were happily wedded at Kostelzen, August 15, 1871, just 50 years ago Monday, and emigrated to America in 1874, directly to this section, arriving here during the gloomy grasshopper plague. Nothing daunted, however, Mr. Kloeckl purchased a farm in Sigel township and by dint of hard work and scrupulous economy the venerable couple attained a competency so that they can enjoy life's sunset in peace and quietude. In 1908 they decided to retire from active agricultural pursuits, and New Ulm has since been their home. Of the 10 children born to Mr. and Mrs. Kloeckl, seven have passed to the Great Beyond. The three surviving children are Frank Kloeckl of Cottonwood township, Mrs. Margaret Prokosch of Sleepy Eye and Mrs. John G. Domeier of Sigel township. They also have 29 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Both jubilarians are still enjoying the best of health, being hale and hearty. Mrs. Kloeckl looks after the housework for herself and husband and they are living contendly in their modest home. That they may enjoy many more happy days together is the sincere wish of the Review and a large circle of friends and acquaintances. They were remembered with a suitable gift by their children and grandchildren upon the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary Monday. *** Children of Joseph Kloeckl and Mary Knier are: 11 i. Druning the funeral services, of Mr. Entinger on Tuesday morning, word was brought to town that Lawrence Entinger had passed to the great beyond, which certainly is a terrible blow to those who survive. Mr. Entinger had not been in the best of health for a number of years, but the last year failed very fast, death being due to diabetes. Matthias Entinger was born September 28, 1862, at Discendahl, Germany, and died Sunday morning, January 25, 1931. At the time of his death he was 69 years, 3 months and 28 days. At the age of eighteen he came to this country with his family and settled at Holstein, Iowa, where he made his home until 1890 when he came to Murray County. On November 20, 1900, Mr. Entinger was united in marriage to Miss Theresa Wermerskirchen, at Iona. In 1905 the family moved to Avoca, where Mr. Entinger was engaged in business for four years, when he returned to our city and where they made their home until 1920, when the family moved on their farm, southwest of town, where he made his home until his death. Mr. Entinger was a kind husband and a loving father, a good neighbor and one that was always willing to do all he could for others. He leaves to mourn his loss, his loving wife, five daughters, Mrs. J. B. Cody, north of Slayton; Margaret, Regina, Celestine, and Delores, and four sons, Peter, Baltus, Lawrence and Richard, all at home, and one sister, Mrs. M. Welter, of Minneapolis. Funeral services were helod on Tuesday morning, January 27, at St. Columba church, Rev. Father Hennekes sang the Requiem High Mass, after which the remains were laid at rest in the St. Columba cemetery. The pall bearers were L. H. McDonald, Jos. Koob, Matt Schroeder, Chas. Herrig, Thos. Scully and Chas. Ludden. While funeral services were being held for his father, Tuesday morning, Lawrence Entinger was fighting a hard battle for his life, but lost to the grim reaper. Lawrence came down with scarlet fever on January 19, and was getting along nicely until Sunday night, when he turned for the worst, and the end came as stated above, Tuesday morning. Lawrence was born in this village, January 23, 1911, and died at his home, Tuesday, January 27, 1931, and had reached the age of 20 years and 4 days at the time of his death. He was one of our finest young men, and, with his cheerful smile, made many friends, and his place will be hard to fill on the farm. On account of the contagion of the disease, a private funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, the remains being laid at rest beside those of his father. (Continued on page 4) (Continued from page 1) Funeral services were held for the deceased Wednesday morning at St. Columba church, Rev. Father Hennekes officiating. The entire community will join us in extending the greatest sympathy to the wife and children in their hour of sadness.
