Have seen a message regarding the name Onyschuk....have just found my grandmother's manifest at Ellis Island. Her name was Onysik(Onysyk)and came from Gallicia in 1912. City listed was Starzawa, Austria...that due to the political situ at the time. May be a help to someone.

Be carefare when researching surnames. Suffixes UK & YK> variant IK or ICK make for two distinctly different surnames.
English equivalent would be like Johnson or Johnston. Frequently these differences connote different ethnicities. ______________________________________________________ M, your example is a close call. It is very good that you are staying that flexible. By the way the origin of your surname comes from the Ruthenian given name, Onysim. The meaning is USEFUL/ADVANTAGEOUS, derived from Greek. Many of the ancient Ukrainian saints bore Greek names. In Polish period a village Staryava (Стар’ява) had the name Starzava (district Stary Sambir, Lviv Region). In times of communist occupation this name remained for the railway station only.
The second village Staryava (Старява) is near Sudova Vyshnya, district Yavoriv. Олег, Льв╕в. |
