Dear Hannia, I am very sorry that it has taken so long for me to reply to your last email. Unfortunately, there has been some illness in my husband's family which has taken up most of our time.

I have tried to summarise the best information I have about the Zolkwers which is as follows : -

My grandfather was called Maurice (Moritz) Zolkwer. He was born 0n 8 December 1876 in Radiechow (Radziechow). He arrived in the UK in May 1897. He states that his father was called Woolf Zolkwer and that he was a distiller by profession. He later claimed that his father was a tailor.

It is thought that Maurice had a brother called Abraham (Adolf) who emigrated from Krystynopol to Buenes Aires in Argentina in 1928. His wife and children followed to Buenes Aires in 1930. The children were called Bernard, Ethel (born October 1906), Deborah (born 1908), Rifka (born 22 February 1912), Cecilia (born 21 December 1914) and Israel (born 18 March 1917) and were all likely to have been born in Krystynopol.

I found an English translation on the internet about a village called Dymtrov. This document names Zokwers as one of the main Jewish families in the village.

Information from Hannia confirms that Radziechow was both the administrative and Judicial/Tax District (property documents) for the village of Dmytrov. The Jewish Kahal was in Cholojow.

Krystynopol (Chervonograd) was in the Sokal administrative and Judicial district. The Jewish Kahal was in Kystynopol.

There seems to be no Jewish Jurisdiction listed for Radziechow (Radowicze). Radziechow was the name of a major town as well as a district. The village of Dmytrov was10 km (about 7 miles) South of Radziechow.

Radziechow is also approximately 22 miles NNE of Chervonograd and Dmytov is 21 miles SE from Chevonograd. So it is very possi ble that the family lived in Krystonopol and/or Dmytrov.

As far as I am aware the only records still available for these areas are as follows : -

Radziechow births: 1832 - 1860
Krystynopol marriages : 1933
Krystynopol school records : 1868 - 1910, 1921 - 1936
Krystynopol Franciskan metric : 1820

Do you agree with this information? Do you think it is possible to check the school records for Krystynopol to see if there we Zolkwers listed? How would we go about this?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Best wishes, Sue

Krystynopol is Chervonohrad today. The Jewish Kahal was located there.

CHERVONOGRAD School Records:
1868-1910 & 1921-1936 & 1925-1933 are in CENTRAL STATE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES OF UKRAINE IN LVIV -

Hello Hania and Sue,

Here is small correction: Ihor’s surname is Voronchak, his e-mail is voronchak@ukr.net.

He did some Jewish research in the past, in particular for Mary, and also for Kolomyja group. As far as I remember Lviv archive would have a number of documents, but also big part of the documents are located in Warsaw, and many are lost completely.

Ihor wrote that currently it is much more difficult to work with the archive. It seems that not all personal there returned already from summer vocations, and now when your order some documents you may have to wait week or more to receive it in reading room. Besides just last week or so some documents were stolen from the archive by the people who ordered them to the reading room, and now archive actually could stop giving public access to some more precious documents, especially loose ones. Many documents from 18-19 century officially are not given to the public because they are supposed to be categorized by the stuff. But in reality nobody is doing anything, they are just lying on the floor.

When searching for Jewish Records, I have found Miriam Weiner's link - "Routes to Roots" the most thorough. That is where I got the info re Chervonohrad School Records List
