Kim,

Short term medical insurance for travelers can be purchased thru your insurance broker or you can telephone AMEX and inquire re theirs.

If one has health issues or is elderly and frail, it would be foolish to go abroad without medical insurance for travelers. The cost of the medical attention is nominal compared to the cost of air ambulance transportation home, if you were to have an accident or fall seriously ill.

Concerning travel medical insurance, not bad company is

http://www.specialtyrisk.com/

We are using it for already 2 years as travel insurance for my wife (for travel from Ukraine to US), but it also has the policies for travel from US to any other country. They are fast in providing documents and everything can be purchased online.

Also few points concerning trip.
To travel by car is probably the best and most safe option. Gasoline is not a problem now, many new gas stations were built during the last years, and shortage of gas is rather in the past. But as you know the prices for oil has reached its top in recent days, so gas prices went up everywhere, including Ukraine.
I found that in Kyiv prices are the following (May 12):
À-76 (80) – 1.75.Hryvna per liter;
À-92 – 2.06 Hryvna per liter
À-95 –2.26 Hryvna per liter.
1 USD is equal approximately 5.33 Hryvnas.

So if you translate to gallons, price of one gallon of gas would be $1.5 that is very close to price in US. But it is just because prices for gas in Europe in general are 2-3 times higher than in US.

One of the other options for travel is to use “marshrutka”. It is van type bus that is very popular now in Western Ukraine. They go almost to every small village with high frequency (each 15-30 minutes), and prices are comparatively very cheap. If you would have some Ukrainian companion with you it should be comparatively safe and convenient way of commute.
