I am seeking any information possible on the Aftanas surname. My Great Grandfather Mikolaj Aftanas came to the United States in 1906 from Pawlokoma, Poland. Any information is greatly appreciated.

GGrandfather Mikolaj*** from Pawlokoma> Brzozow (Adm District)> Dynow (Judicial district)> Western Galicia, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian
Empire> today Podkarpackie Region of SE Poland.

Link below is a busy one. Be patient. It will provide you w/18th century Cadastral Records for Pavlokoma.

According to Ellis Island Records, the Aftanas clan looks to be mainly Ruthenian. There had been a Greek Catholic Church in Pawlokoma. The Church was left in ruins. In 1945 the Ukrainian population in Pawlokoma was virtually wiped out. Three hundred Ukrainian villagers were massacred by the Poles during WW2. Professor Petro Potichnyj, a Canadian scholar, is currently writing a book about the Pawlokoma massacres.

You should be able to contact the Przemysl Archives and get documentation for GGrandfather and his ancestors dating back to 18th century.

*** Could Mikolaj and Michal Aftanas be the same person??? He arrived in New York the middle of December 1905. He was 23 at the time. He was heading for Shenandoah, PA and meeting up w/his brother, Stefan. Stefan originally was heading for Pittsburgh upon immigration.

There are interesting details on the ORIGINAL SHIP MANIFESTS.
