I am trying to get information on the village of Ostrov (spelling may be wrong) near Halych (4 kilometers, I believe) but cannot even find it on a map. I would love to find any information at all as my family is from there. Any tips on how to start looking for family names in Ostrow or Halych would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. |

Today selo/village Ostriv> Halychkij Raion/District> Ivano Frankivska Oblast/Region> Ukraine (UA abbr), lastest postal code 77151 Ostriv (coordinates 49.10-24.38) is 5.7 miles NW of Halych(coordinates 49.07-24.44). Perform search for Halych below (spelled Galich on this link) and note Ostriv, slightly NW of it. http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm JewishGen ShtetlSeeker - Town Search ______________________________________________________________________ What are your ancestors' names and where did they settle upon immigration? Appx when did they emigrate Ukraine? What religion did they practice? |

June,
Was David, a 17 yr. old merchant w/$10 in pocket, arriving in 1910 and heading for his brother's (Salomon's) on Lower East Side of NY, one of your relatives? He listed leaving his father Berl in Halycz. Salomon's address shows up c/o M. J.? Lieblein on 2nd St. There are some Jewish Archival Records online that show a Berl Lieblein, married to Marjem Stockhamer, living in Stanislawow (old name for Ivano Frankivsk, the regional center town) and producing a son, Hersh Lieb in 1894. And then there are three young Lieblein sisters (Rosa, Loncia & Genia) arriving in NY in 1913. They were heading for their brother's (Salomon) in Bklyn. Their father was listed as Markus. They too were from Stanislawow/Ivano Frankivsk, the regional center town. PS>Coming from Eastern Europe, it was not uncommon to refer to one's cousin as brother or sister. |

Galich
Thank you so much. The first listing is someone I was very close to, and I had seen that information on EllisIsland.org. That was so exciting to find it! I do not know the others, and at this point do not believe they are related, but will hold on to the information just in case.
I did not find anything in the jewishgen site. But, my computer is old and acting up a bit so I'll keep trying. Do you know of any other ways to find information? Or pictures? Or a street map? I am already so thrilled with this site. Thank you very much for your kind assistance. |

I was also wondering about specific records: how would I find birth, death, marriage certificates, land ownership information. I know my grandfather owned a store, but I only found one business listing, and it wasn't listed in 'Polish businesses of 1929'. And another grandfather owned a hotel in L'vov. I would love to find any documents about their lives, and see if there is/was any other family still out there.
Also, is there a way to find out if there is still a Jewish population in Ostriv or Galich? I had been told by a relative that none survived, but I would love to find out for sure. If they exist, they are probably elderly, and may possibly remember my grandparents, or even be related. Thank you so much again, for your kind help. |
