I would like to summarize the religions that we have encountered in our researches and what they usually signify as to ethnicity.
Roman Catholic - normally means Polish Greek Catholic - normally means Ukrainian Greek Orthodox - normally means Russian Russian Catholic - means ? Russian Orthodox - means ? Eastern Orthodox - means ? Please can somebody fill in the blanks and/or add any other religions they have encountered. For example, my grandfather said there were some Baptists living in his region, and of course he mentioned Jewish people. |

Most Baptists were of German heritage, although there were some Slavs that had converted to the Baptist Religion. District and regional center towns were heavily populated by Jews. There were also Romanians, Armenians & Macedonians living in this area. This was not as homogeneous a society as one would think an agrarian society would be.
Greek Orthodox informally refers to Ukrainian Orthodox. Russian Orthodox informally refers to Russian ethnicity. Greek Catholic informally refers to Western Ukrainian Uniates>converted from Orthodox Church to Catholic in appx 17th century. Ritual was orthodox, but the tenets were Catholic. Roman Catholic informally refers to Polish ethnicity. There are several variants of the four above. To this day there are still discussions, which variant refers to what ethnicity. |
