Post

I had posted earlier about trying to find information on my great grandparents. Their names were Samuel and Marya (Charnetski / Czernecki) Bocian. Samuel served in the Austro Hungarian or Russian Military in 1907. I assume the Austro Hungarian Military. Samuel was from Sidorow (Sydoriv), Husiatyn, Galacia, Austria. This was the information on their Certificate of Naturalization. Marya was born in Kotsiubyn'chyky (I'm not sure if this is misspelled), Husiatyn, Galacia, Austria. This is near Cernokonec'ka Volja. The map I originally had was from c. 1900. I recently printed a newer version. Samuel came to Canada in 1911 and later had Marya sent in 1924. If there is anything else that I can give you to aide me in my search please post a reply I have been waiting a long time for the answers I seek.

Sydoriv>Husyatyn>Ternopil

If Samuel was Ruthenian, his given name was probably anglicized from Semen/Semeon??? The meaning of the surname, Bocian, probably means PERSON, WALKING W/BARE FEET???

Since Samuel/Semeon/Semen was from Sidorow (Polish) in Tarnopol (Polish) Region> Galicia, administered by ethnic Poles for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he would have served in the AUSTRO HUNGARIAN ARMY.

Austria = Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Unless he was an officer, there isn't all that much info available for Samuel.

PS>From 1919-1924 Tarnopol belonged to Poland, which had not existed as a geopolitical entity for about 125 yrs prior to this.

Addresses for village administrators in both Sydoriv & Kotsiubyntsi follow. Communicating in Ukrainian is ideal.

What religion was practiced by family? Did they consider themselves Ukrainian or Polish?

Have you done any archives or LDS research? Having names of siblings is important to locating relatives that are indeed one's own. Make a real effort to get that info before writing village mayors!

Answer to your post on another thread.

In 1907, Grandfather's place of origin was not under Czarist Russia, so being shipped to Siberia is family legend mis-tell. In 1907, Grandfather was an Austrian citizen and would have joined the Austro-Hungarian Army or Navy.

In 1924 Grandmother was a Polish citizen, coming from this very same area.

FROM 1919-1939 YOUR ANCESTRAL AREA BELONGED TO POLAND.

Even officials were confused re changes in this area.

In 1918, after WW1, the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed.

Ternopil Region was the border region between Poland and Russia. This was not the same border that exists today between Poland and Ukraine.

Hannia, I do not have the link, but maybe Amanda needs to read the article, " Was your Baba from Austria?" It helped explain this confusion to my family members.

Amanda,

Kim has a point. Following article may help unconfuse some geohistorical issues.
