We are searching for our family from the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast Region of thr Ukraine.
Fedor Theodorius Mochoruk and Ilena Mochoruk(Melynchuk) left from Toporivtsi,Horodenka
,Sniatyn or surrounding areas in 1899-1900 to Chipman,Alberta,Canada with thier son Wasyl(12) and Maria(10).
They had letters from family until 1943,then all letters stopped.
I'am the Greatgrand son of Fedor and Ilena.
Our Church is the Ukrainian Greek Cathiolic Church.
If anyone has knowledge as how to find releatives there. Please contact me at blackgld8@hotmail.com.
The postal address of the village heads would also be appreciated.

Hannia is on a distinguished road
Patrick,

Are you sure you are researching selo/village Toporivtsi in the Horodenkivskij Raion/District of Ivano Frankivska Oblast/Region? This area is frequently referred to as Hutsulschyna and your GGrandparents would have been Hutsul (micro-ethnic group)???

Most early Ruthenian/Ukrainian immigrants to Canada (especially the ones that settled around Smoky Lake), haled from selo Toporivtsi in Chernivtsi Oblast, more commonly referred to as the Bukovina Region.

I am providing you w/ addresses to both villages. Communicating in Ukrainian is best.

Holovi Silskoji Rady
selo Toporivtsi
Horodenkivskij Raion
Ivano-Frankivska Oblast
UA 78162

Holovi Silskoji Rady
selo Toporivtsi
Novoseltskij Raion
Chernivetska Oblast
UA 60311

PS>The village in Ivano Frankivska Region is about 1200 people, while the village in Chernivtsi Region has about 5/6 thousand population. If I were you, I would start w/a letter to smaller of the two places and wait for a response. If you don't receive one in a 3-4 month period, I would consider hiring an experienced local to do a personal search in Toporivtsi in Chernivtsi, as the village is quite large and given the economy, you really do not want to acquire relatives that might not be your own. If you are interested in doing that, I can recommend someone who actually lives in Ivano-Frankivsk, the city. His rates are fair and he comes w/exc references. He has some difficult searches under his belt. He has family in the police department, a car, a computor and he speaks English. He knows all these areas quite well.
